Description:
Mary Magdalene, the alleged prostitute who repents her sordid life and follows Jesus, is one of Art History's most inspired subjects.
According to Christian tradition, after meeting Christ, Mary Magdalene repented of her former sinful ways. With her ivory skin and long golden hair, the beautiful Magdalene turns her gaze toward heaven. The juxtaposition of the breviary or book under her arm with the skull make it clear she is meditating on the brevity of life and the salvation made possible by Christ's death. Images of female saints sometimes depicted in a seductive manner, were very popular with some artists and patrons in the 17th century, and numerous influences are seen in this work by an unidentified 17th/18th century master, where same subjects by Raphael, Reni, and not least Titian come readily to mind.

The painting is in good condition. It is varnished and has some old crackling of pigment layers. The canvas has been relined. There is slight age toning and minimal surface grime.
